Overview of School Council
Who we are and what we do
School council advises the school principal or school board based on the
general views of the school community
and the best interests of all students
in the school. The council's goal is to improve student achievement and enhance
the accountability of the education system to parents.
The School Council must be a composed of a majority of parents, as well it includes the principal, one teacher employed in the school, and one non-teaching employee of the school.
To ensure that parents, through their school councils, are able to influence decisions affecting their children’s education, school boards and principals are required to actively seek the views of their school councils on a variety of matters.
For example, the school principal would consult the school council
about:
- all initiatives that relate to the improvement of student achievement or
enhance the accountability of the system
to parents - the school policy regarding code of conduct
- the school policy regarding appropriate dress for
students - the school’s action plans for improvement based on
reports of EQAO test results
- any new education initiatives at the school level
